NURSING to Sleep

Why as a Sleep Consultant I really don't focus on Sleep Association

When we talk about baby sleep, we often hear about sleep associations—those habits or routines that help babies fall asleep, like rocking, nursing, or white noise. But before we get caught up in whether an association is "good" or "bad," I wish  we shift back our focus to the fundamental: sensory needs.

YOUR MIND

around Baby Sleep

Addiction to be nursed does not exist

It is not an habit, it is a sensory preference

Being held is the (biological, emotional and cognitive) starting point for learning autonomy

It is one of the most powerful tool, but definitly not the only one.

Senses

PROPRIOCEPTION

Vestibular System

It is a group of receptors located around the ears that are specialized in detecting the pull of gravity, balance, and movement. This system allows us to determine our position in space, as well as how our body is moving within gravity.

For example: Tummy Time and scooping movements on daily life are the foundational activities for maturing the vestibular system.

Proprioception

It's the sense that allows us to receive information from our muscles and joints. This information is then sent to our brain, informing it of our body's position and movement at any given time. With the help of proprioception, we are able to perceive the amount of force we use and determine the location of our extremities in relation to our body.

For example: This is why it is pressure type massages for newborns, instead of the more well-known gentle touch massages.

Interoception

Interoception: refers to the awareness of what is happening inside our body. This includes knowing our oxygen levels, if our bladder is full or empty, and whether we are hungry or need to eat. Additionally, it also involves the signals we receive from our emotional experiences, such as feeling anxious or happy. For instance, we may experience changes in our heart rate when we feel excited or have a fluttery feeling in our stomach when we are anxious.

For example: we may feel changes in our heart beat when we are feeling playful or we have a fluttering feeling in our stomach when we are anxious.

Sensory Profile

PROFILE SENSIBLE

VASE LONG
